About Ben Abernathy

Mr. Abernathy, a Florida native, was introduced to the construction industry in 1975 as a carpenter apprentice while attending college for construction management and engineering at FIU. He progressed from carpenter to foreman, suprintendent, project manager to eventaully president of SAC Construction. A leading commercial contracting company in South Florida for over 30 years. In 1996, he relocated to Carbondale, Colorado where he expanded the business in residential development. Then, in 2002 he returned to Florida to reestablish his business presence in the South Florida market. Ben has a combined total of 40 years in the construction industry as a business owner.

About Peter “Jamie” Cumming

Born in Rapid City South Dakota to working-class parents, a hard rock mining father and a jewelry store attendant mother, Jamie joined the Marines to escape the boredom of a small mining town.

He served on sea duty aboard the USS Constellation and then in the fleet marine force with Echo Company’s second battalion fifth marines in Central America and the Near and Far East.

After leaving the Marines, Jamie attended Seneca College in Toronto and earned his associate degree in mechanical engineering technology. From there he moved to Orlando to start work with Addison Weatherking in the engineering department and attended UCF working towards his Bachelor.

Jamie has been working in the HVAC commercial service industry since. He was employed by Carrier, Trane, and a small mom-and-pop shop where he learned the value of hard work, honesty and not trying to find the easiest path to accomplish his customers’ goals. He developed a fierce sense of fair play and integrity.

He, together with Ben Abernathy, started SFMS in 2019 to impart his values to the local industry in South Florida. He will always make himself available to his customers, vendors and employees for their concerns or just to chew the fat.
